a story like mine
Books are most effective when they are relevant to children’s lives, but our current inventory of culturally diverse books is not nearly sufficient to meet the need of the wide diversity of children and families we serve. To bridge the gap between the need for culturally diverse books and the lack of availability, we are launching “A Story Like Mine.” Your support of this project helps us make more culturally diverse books available for all of the children we serve.

Only about 1% of the books donated each year contain multicultural content. Please consider donating your gently-used culturally diverse children's books or check out this list of some of our favorites to purchase and donate. For a great deal on the books we need most, contribute to our A Story Like Mine fund. Donations made through this fund will be used to buy new multicultural children’s books at discounts through a variety of vendors.

After Marisol received books from The Children's Book Bank--in English and Spanish--her mother explained what these books mean for her family. “My parents didn’t read to us when we were children. We didn’t have any books at home. Really, none of the parents in our village read with their children. Now that we have these beautiful books, I read with my daughter every night at bedtime, and she has fallen in love with books! Her favorite is ¡Nos vamos a Mexico! She has memorized the story, and we talk about the pictures together. Now she knows about the village where her own grandmother lives and where I grew up. She likes to pretend she is in the story, too, and tells me, ‘Mommy, this is me’ when she sees a little girl that looks like her.”
