When summer time comes and children have 10 weeks off from school, reading skills gained during the school year lose ground. This "summer slide" disproportionately affects students who lack books at home to keep on reading.
DID YOU KNOW?
Studies show that students who do not read over the summer will lose more than two months of reading achievement each year. This loss can accumulate to a 2 year achievement gap by the 6th grade.*
Through our Lessening the “Summer Slide” program, The Children’s Book Bank provides books for “free book fairs” at low-income elementary and middle schools where students can choose books to take home and read over the summer.
Our programs for elementary and middle school students also include book distributions before winter and spring breaks to encourage reading any time school is not in session.
