K through Grade 1

Emerging readers need access to books 24/7 to support their early reading development.

88% of children who are poor readers at the end of first grade will be
poor readers in 4th grade.*

According to a meta-analytic research synthesis commissioned by Reading Is Fundamental, access to print materials at home:

  • Improves reading performance
  • Is instrumental in learning the basics of reading
  • Causes children to read more and for longer lengths of time
  • Produces improved attitudes toward reading and learning (Learning Point Associates 2010).

Through our Supporting Literacy Development program The Children’s Book Bank brings bundles of books to K/1 students at targeted local elementary schools in high poverty neighborhoods.
